Interestingly, those genes haven't vanished completely. Researchers have found remnants of the molecular pathways for tooth development still sitting in bird genomes — evolutionary leftovers from ancestors that had teeth, even though no living bird actually grows a set. It doesn't mean a chicken could suddenly sprout teeth; it just means the old genetic "blueprint" hasn't been entirely erased.
